The ‘Hungarian Cube’ (Magyar kocka) is a standardised type of residential housing in Hungary built after WWII. The design is named after János Kádár, the Communist leader of Hungary between 1956 and 1988.

Hungarian Cubes usually have a floor area of 9 × 9 metres or 10 × 10 metres. Ornamental or geometric decorations on facades were the only way to customise the houses. German-Hungarian artist Katharina Roters explored the Magyar kocka by photographing some of the finest examples, which will be published in her book Hungarian Cubes.

Hungarian Cubes will be published on July 15 in the United states, but available from European online booksellers.
